To add rational numbers, you can use the same rules you used to add integers.
Example
1. Find
each sum.
–4.8 + (–8.7)
Alternative Solutions :
–4.8 + (–8.7)
= – (│–4.8│ + │–8.7│)
= – (4.8 + 8.7)
= –13.5
When adding three or more rational numbers, you can use the Commutative
and Associative Properties to rearrange the addends.
Example
3. Find
14.8 ÷ (–7.2)
+ 30.7.
Alternative Solutions :
14.8 ÷
(–7.2) + 30.7
= (14.8 + 30.7) + (–7.2) Comm.
& Assoc. Properties (+)
=
45.5 + (–7.2)
Add.
= 38.3 Simplify.

4. Jason
Wilson has kept track of the level of water in his farm’s pond over the past
five years. He compared the water level to the overall average. Find the net
change in the water level of the pond.
Alternative Solutions :
To
find the net change in the water level, add.
Group
positive numbers together and negative numbers together.
You subtract rational numbers the same way that you subtract
integers.
Example
5. Find
–4.5 – 6.8.
Alternative Solutions :
–4.5 –
6.8 = –4.5 + (–6.8) To
subtract 6.8, add –6.8.
= –11.3 The
numbers have the same sign.
Add their absolute values.
