Sometimes you can combine two or more terms at a time in such a way that each term has an algebraic expression as a common factor.

 

Practice

 

1.     6xy² + 4xy + 9xy + 6x =

 

2.     15xy + 5x + 6y + 2 =

 

3.     9x³ + 18x² – x – 2 =

 

Solutions

 

1.     6xy² + 4xy + 9xy + 6x = 2xy(3y + 2) + 3x(3y + 2)

          = (2xy + 3x)(3y + 2)

          = x(2y + 3x)(3y + 2)

 

2.     15xy + 5x + 6y + 2 = 5x(3y + 1) + 2(3y + 1)

      = (5x + 2)(3y + 1)

 

3.     9x³ + 18x² – x – 2 = 9x²(x + 2) – 1(x + 2)

    = (9x² – 1)(x + 2)
