More on the Distribution Property – the FOIL Method

The FOIL method helps us to use the distribution property to help expand expressions like (x + 4) (2x – 1). The letters in ‘‘FOIL’’ describe the sums and products.

F        First × First           (x + 4) (2x – 1):     x(2x) = 2x²

      + O        Outer × Outer        (x + 4) (2x – 1):     x(–1) = – x

 

        I  I

      + I         Inner × Inner         (x + 4) (2x – 1):     4(2x) = 8x

 

      L          L

     + L         Last × Last            (x + 4) (2x – 1):     4(– 1) = –4
